Our restoration philosophy is quite simple. Do one thing and do it really well.
This is precisely why the Vintage Cruiser Company only specializes in the restoration of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser. In fact, our love for the brand shows in everything that we do, and grows with every frame-off restoration we complete. It is this singular focus, which inspires us to deliver the finest Toyota Land Cruiser restorations in the world.
It all starts with a solid foundation and then we build up from there. As part of our rigorous selection criteria, every restoration candidate we inspect must have a solid chassis, little to no body rust, and above all, matching numbers.
Only the Best-Kept Land Cruisers are Chosen to be Reborn as Vintage Cruisers.TM
Unlike many of our competitors, we only perform full, nut and bolt, frame-off restorations.
What this simply means is that we completely disassemble each and every Toyota Land Cruiser down to its chassis as part of our demanding restoration process. Every single part that is removed is meticulously photographed, inspected, catalogued and stored in its own dedicated locker corresponding to each Vintage CruiserTM we build.
If It’s Not Welded On, Then It’s Taken Off!
We first hand scrape and then we sand blast each and every body panel, and the chassis, to bare metal.
Why do we hand scrape before we sand blast if sand blasting strips all the paint off the metal to begin with? Because even though it’s labor intensive, hand scraping is considerably easier on the metal than sand blasting.
Hand Scraping First, and Then Sand Blasting Ensures the Metal is not Damaged!
After we hand scrape, we sand blast each metal substrate to remove the remaining paint.
Sand blasting is a process whereby fine grains of sand are blasted at the metal using compressed air in order to strip the paint revealing the true condition of the metal underneath.
Our goal is to preserve the integrity of the original body panels and metalwork so that we can guarantee a factory finish when our restorations are completed.
We Have Found That This Two Step Process is Optimal in Achieving This Goal!
After we hand scrape and sand blast each metal substrate, it is often necessary to fix rusted out and corroded areas that were previously not visible.
We have a strict policy of only using new sheet metal to fix all affected areas. In fact, unlike many of our competitors, we have the resources (original and reproduction dies and molds) to reproduce virtually any Land Cruiser body panel to original Toyota specifications. We never have to use fiberglass (except as Toyota originally used for the roof) and/or putty to restore our Vintage Cruisers.TM
The End Result is a Pristine Canvas We Can Finish to Original Toyota Factory Specifications!
We apply a two step etch priming process to every substrate that has been hand scraped and sand blasted to ensure the highest level of rust proofing available. Why do we use a two step etch primer? Because original body panels are normally and originally galvanized and/or electrocoated to provide protection from corrosion, and hand scraping and sand blasting the metal removes this protection and opens up the substrate to potential corrosion.
Etch Priming is the Only Way to Properly Re-Seal the Substrate from Corrosion!
Once the Vintage CruiserTM has been re-sealed with our two step etch priming process, we apply five coats of Glasurit automotive paint, always matching the original Toyota color codes for the particular year and model unless the client has specified otherwise. We then wet sand all the surfaces with 2000, 3000, and 5000 fine grit sand paper before we buff the paint to a deep brilliant gloss using 3M polish. Finally, we apply three layers of clear coat to shield the finish from the elements.
Every Vintage CruiserTM We Restore Looks Like It Came Straight Off the Assembly Line!
Every Toyota Land Cruiser we restore receives a complete mechanical overhaul of every major component of the powertrain and drivetrain. We leave no stone unturned and completely disassemble and rebuild the engine, transmission, transfer case, clutch assemblies, and front and rear differentials.
Every engine we refurbish is fully disassembled and all major components (head, crank, pistons, rods and cam shafts) are inspected, machined (as necessary) and fully restored to original Toyota specifications. We also completely disassemble and rebuild the transmission, transfer case and differentials using new bearings, seals and gaskets.
We also make sure that the engine compartment of every Vintage CruiserTM is brought back to original Toyota specifications, including the mounting of all hardware and the replacement of all reservoirs.
All Our Vintage CruisersTM Are as Flawless on the Inside as They Are Beautiful on the Outside!
One of the most important stages of any restoration is the installation of the electrical system.
Every Vintage CruiserTM that we build receives a brand new wiring harness (including the relay boards, fuse blocks, fuse covers, connectors and grounding straps), as well as a new battery, starter, voltage regulator and alternator.
The Loom is the Nerve Center of the Entire Vehicle and It's Vital That It be Installed Properly!
During the disassembly stage of our restoration process, we remove and dispose of all fuel, brake and hydraulic lines. The fuel tank is stripped and refinished and the fuel neck is anodized to original factory specifications. Every brake line is fabricated from scratch and new hoses, fittings and couplings are installed. The entire brake system is totally renewed with a new brake booster, pumps, calipers, pads, bearings, rotors (or drums), seals and gaskets and so is the power steering (hydraulic) system.
If the client has requested disk brakes and/or power steering, we make the proper modifications using only genuine Toyota parts.
Every Vintage CruiserTM We Modernize and Restore is as Safe as It is Fun to Drive.
Finally, we replace all worn out suspension components, including the front and rear leaf springs, bushings, U-bolts, shackles, pins, shocks and dampener with either OEM, Old Man Emu or IRONMAN suspension components according to client specifications.
Our Vintage CruisersTM are Purpose Built to Take You Anywhere!
The truth is in the details, and this has never been more true than with the Vintage Cruiser Company.
This is why we remove, clean, zinc plate, re-chrome and re-galvanize and/or anodize each trim piece and every single bolt to ensure an original factory finish. We also replace all weather stripping, including window moldings, body seals, channel felts, and door seals with Toyota genuine parts.
Our Ultimate Goal is to Deliver the Vintage CruiserTM of Your Dreams!
As part of the interior finish, we either refurbish or completely replace the cluster with a new OEM cluster, and all labels, shift plates and knobs are installed new. The steering wheel and column are brought back to original specifications, and all dash knobs are completely replaced and/or restored.
We also replace the headliner, door panels and all seating surfaces, including cushions, with period correct and brand new upholstery and install all new carpeting throughout, always matching original Toyota colors and specifications unless the client instructs otherwise.
Every Part of a Vintage CruiserTM Cabin Looks Absolutely Flawless!
This is where all the hard work pays off, and where we can finally see the results of hundreds of man hours of restoration come together. During this final stage of production, we pay close attention to every detail and replace all emblems, front and rear turn signal assemblies, and all doorsill plates and body hardware. At this time, we make final adjustments to all body panels and re-adjust cabin bolts, as necessary, to ensure that the cabin is properly mounted on to the chassis.
Every Vintage CruiserTM We Build is as True and Straight as When It Came Off the Assembly Line!
Once the restoration process has been completed, the newly reborn Vintage CruiserTM undergoes a throughout 150-point inspection to ensure that it meets our exacting quality control standards. Our master mechanics then perform a final mechanical service to ensure that all engine, drivetrain, suspension and electrical components are up to Toyota specifications and are fine-tuned and ready for final certification.
Your Newly Reborn Vintage CruiserTM Undergoes a Thorough 150-Point Inspection!
Once a final inspection has been performed, our CEO and President personally test drives the newly reborn Vintage CruiserTM through the mountains and highways of beautiful Costa Rica for a minimum of 450 miles to ensure everything is in excellent working order. We then carefully load and secure the newly reborn Vintage CruiserTM into a fully enclosed and dedicated container and deliver it straight to our client's door step.
